Why We Built Data Delete Now

Data Delete Now started as a simple, homegrown project built around one idea:

People should be able to delete their personal data without needing a law degree, technical expertise, or dozens of hours of effort.

Today, personal information is routinely collected and sold by data brokers—often without people realizing it’s happening. Even when laws give individuals the right to delete that data, the process is usually fragmented and unrealistic. Most people are expected to find hundreds of companies, submit individual requests, and track compliance on their own.

Very few people can do that.

California proved there’s a better way.

What California Already Did

California has already implemented a working solution through its centralized deletion system, known as the Delete Request and Opt-Out Platform (DROP). This platform allows California residents to submit one request that applies to all registered data brokers at once.

That system is live today and overseen by the California Privacy Protection Agency.

This matters because it shows that:

  • Centralized data deletion is possible

  • It can work at scale

  • It can be enforced responsibly

Data Delete Now is focused on helping other states and the federal government follow this already-enacted model, rather than inventing something new from scratch.

Why We Ask People to Register

Laws don’t change just because something makes sense.
They change when lawmakers see clear, documented public support.

When people register on this site, we are not selling or exploiting their information. Instead, we are responsibly aggregating supporter data—such as state and ZIP code—to show legislators that real constituents want practical data privacy protections modeled after California’s law.

This allows us to:

  • Demonstrate state-by-state public support

  • Show lawmakers this issue matters to their voters

  • Support legislation that mirrors existing California privacy laws

  • Help move similar protections forward at both the state and federal level

Put simply:
Registration turns individual concern into something lawmakers can act on.

How This Connects to State and Federal Legislation

Our immediate focus is supporting state-level adoption, where privacy laws are often passed first. At the same time, we support federal efforts—such as the proposed DELETE Act—aimed at creating consistent protections nationwide.

Federal agencies like the Federal Trade Commission would play a key role in enforcing any national standard, much like they do with other consumer protections.

History shows that federal privacy laws often follow successful state models. California’s system provides that roadmap—and public participation helps accelerate the process.

A Commitment to Privacy

We believe in practicing what we advocate.

Information submitted through this site is used only to communicate about Data Delete Now and to demonstrate aggregated public support for privacy legislation. We do not sell, rent, or share supporter data with third parties.

Transparency and restraint are core to this project.

Your Role

By registering your support, asking questions, or sharing this effort, you help build the momentum needed to turn an already-working idea into broader protection for everyone.

This project is small, independent, and growing—but every signup strengthens the case for giving people real control over their personal data.
